Born in Vannes in 1971. Lives and works in Morbihan, Brittany.
Frédérique Tristant is both a semiotician and a painter. This dual training permeates her work, which goes beyond graphics to include the tools of reproduction (photos, videos) and the results of scientific investigations (radiology, scans, MRI).
Based on this reflection, the artist explores the boundaries and tension between the physical reality of the skin and the body, and the dreamlike vision offered by its representation. This reality is subtly recreated in a two-dimensional space and materialized by thinner layers. Her work features portraits of women, retouched in watercolor and acrylic, evoking memories on the surface of their skin.
Frédérique Tristant acquires the physiognomy and begins to modify it freely. She refines the mask, which tells the story of a woman like a diary of melancholy, absence and sensuality. The folds and wrinkles of tissue paper anchor his work in the vanitas genre, creating a clear transition between photographic evidence and painting. The motifs (flowers, trees, birds, stripes, liberty etc.) allow us to move from a photographed real person to a fictional one, ignoring the simple decorative aspects. Landscapes and urban architecture are also part of his personal narrative, recreating the geography of his childhood fantasies. The motif is Proust's Madeleine, and his work makes a nostalgic, personal memory universal.
