Biography

Born in 1958 in Saint-Etienne. He lives and works in Cannes.

After social sciences studies at the Sainte-Anne University in Canada, Joel Cuoq began a long journey from North America to South America, where he discovered the Indian civilizations first, then Aztec, Maya and Inca, which will have a great influence on his artistic work.

In 1980, he settled in San Francisco. During this period, he went several times to New York and discovered Modern and Contemporary Art. In 1986, he moved to Los Angeles where he worked as a window decorator in Beverly Hills famous shops.

Back in France in 1989, he settled on the French Riviera, where he still lives. He regularly exhibits in the region and its main artistic influences are the Figuration Libre, Tribal arts and comics.

Since 2009, he is developping a new project, the Press Paper Cube mosaic. He creates cubes from compressed magazine pages to realize 3D compositions like mosaic, pixels or picture reconstruction.
Inspired by pixelation and photomosaic, his works have an unique visual rendering and are composed of a myriad of small cubes, each cube is a compressed magazine page. By varying the thickness of each cube or its color, it allows different interpretations vertically and horizontally. The 3D and the relief offer a different perception to the viewer, thanks to the light effects. His works are based on three main conceps : recycling (giving a second life to old magazines), collage and mosaic.
