Marcus Egli was born in Zürich in 1957 – † 2016 – Ponts-de-Martel – Switzerland
Marcus Egli doesn’t call himself a sculptor, but a metalworker. His encounter with aluminum came about in the 1980s, when he and his wife bought a small hardware manufacturing business. There he cultivated the skills needed to handle this capricious metal, whose liquidity, lightness, soft color with a discreet bluish sheen, and conductivity allow him to feel the heat and energy of those who touch it….
These works are often variations on the motif of the “Hominium”, a small figure with a stiff posture and a polished face that reflects the image of the beholder and the world around him. He plays on the contrast of materials; the rough and rugged aspect of the body combined with the smooth. Marcus Egli stages his “Hominium”, bringing them together and conditioning them. He creates loose or dense crowds, blocks, galleries of portraits.
In this way, Marcus Egli questions our relationship with the world, our relationship with history. His stagings, which often resemble installations, tackle the themes of the absurd, anonymity, multitude and solitude. They reflect to us the image of our own existence. The temporality froze in metal and moved in its image. His mirror games are also role-playing games in which everyone can find themselves or lose themselves.
